A brief history...
During the Mayan period (about 250 to 950 ce), Cozumel was a center for both
commercial and ceremonial activities, which explains the small archaeological sites that you can
see around the
island. In the 1500s, a Spaniard named Juan de Grijalva led the first Spanish expedition to
Cozumel. From then on, the Spaniards used the island as abase for Spanish efforts to conquer the
Maya.
